Richard Burton

Richard Burton (born November 10, 1925, in Pontrhydyfen, Wales – died August 5, 1984) was a Welsh actor. He studied at Oxford University after serving in the Royal Air Force during World War Ⅱ. Early success on the stage, particularly in Shakespearean productions, established him as one of Britain’s most gifted young actors.

He gained international acclaim through films such as The Robe, Becket, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and Anne of the Thousand Days. He received seven Academy Award nominations and was celebrated for his powerful voice and commanding presence. Known for intensity and classical technique, he became one of cinema’s great dramatic actors.

He remained a major star throughout the 1960s and 1970s, with his collaborations and marriage to Elizabeth Taylor drawing worldwide attention.
