A spontaneous choice led a man from Clinton County to secure a $2 million Powerball prize.
Zach Birchmeier, 31, from Fowler, typically doesn’t play Powerball but opted to purchase a ticket online for the Sept. 23 drawing, as reported by the Michigan Lottery.
His ticket successfully matched the five white balls drawn—1, 12, 20, 33, 66—earning him $1 million. Since he chose the Power Play option, his prize doubled to $2 million.
“After the drawing, I saw an email from the Lottery with instructions on claiming my prize,” Birchmeier told the Michigan Lottery. “When I logged in to my account and saw $2 million pending, I was in shock!”
He has now collected his winnings and plans to use the money for constructing a new home and making investments.
“You see this happen to other people, but you never think it will happen to you, so it all still feels surreal,” Birchmeier said.
Birchmeier bought his ticket during a period when the jackpot reached an estimated $1.4 billion ($634.7 million cash value), making it the third-largest jackpot in the game’s history, as per the Powerball website.
